Q: Dan, how did you get your film and video production experience?
A: "I started in film and video as a freshman in high school working during the weekends and summer for Jamie Moore Productions in Gadsden, AL. After that, I attended film school for three semesters before going to work for Disney/MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida. During that time, I also had the opportunity to freelance for a number of other production companies."

Q: How did you get the job at Disney?
A: "I moved to Orlando and lived for a short time with some very dear friends of mine. The father knew the Vice President of Film and Tape at the Studios and gave him a call on my behalf. The VP called me on his cell phone the next day and said, 'Anyone whose crazy enough to want to work in this business deserves a shot at it.' He had me forward my resume to the Studio Manager and within a few days, I had my first PA (production assistant) job on a show entitled Inside Out which was then hosted by Scott Herriott."

Q: What advice would you give to someone interested in film or video production?
A: "First, get a business card and a cell phone. Make yourself available 24 hours a day. The first time you are called for a job take it no matter what they are paying. While you're on the job, never let your feet touch the ground. Pitch in wherever you can and give your business card to whoever will take it. And one final hint, always keep your cell phone on vibrate!"

Q: How important is "networking" with other people in the industry?
A: "Getting in the industry is about who you know and not so much what you know. Then once you get your "big break," if you don't know much it really doesn't matter who you know. Be a trustworthy, diligent worker."

Q: Dan, have you ever done any acting?
A: "Absolutely. We had a wonderful drama teacher in high school that instilled in us the need for the dramatic arts, and it paid off. In fact, I had the privilege of being asked to appear in several recurring episodes of Walt Disney World's Inside Out, two of which were speaking roles." (View Dan's acting resume)

Q: Any final thoughts?
A: "One thing I have learned is that film is the creative product of many people, never just one. The producer controls the finances which can narrow the director's scope to fully accomplish his/her vision and he/she may not have complete latitude regarding the script which has been created by a writer who probably envisions the project differently. Then you have the perceptions of the art director, effects team, production designer, actors and a host of other players. The finished product is the result of the collaboration between these different teams of people. The key to being a great Director is the ability to communicate the vision while encouraging the talented artists around you to perform at their peak level."
